What awaits you on Splash Mountain

Set in the peaceful corner of Critter Country, this beloved attraction invites you into the whimsical world of Br’er Rabbit and friends.

Bayou-style scenic adventure

Board a classic log boat and float through a charming Southern-style landscape before diving into lively indoor scenes. Over 100 audio-animatronic characters, including Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Fox, and Br’er Bear, bring the story to life with humor, heart, and music.

Carefully choreographed journey

The ride lasts about 10 minutes and features a seamless mix of slow scenic sections, gentle dips, and four exciting drops. The story unfolds through colorful vignettes, building anticipation for the finale.

Signature 16m plunge

The grand finale is a thrilling 16m (about 52.5 ft) drop at a 45-degree angle. As your log boat bursts out of the mountain, get ready for a splash and a burst of fresh air — an unforgettable highlight of the ride.

Light splash, big smiles

Typically, the standard ride leaves you only lightly misted, perfect for guests who want the excitement with minimal wetness. However, during some summer overlays like “Get Soaked MAX Plus” (Jul–Sep 2025), expect a much wetter experience.

Local storytelling magic

Currently, this is the only Splash Mountain operating in the world. Tokyo’s version features Japanese narration and classic Disney songs in English. Scene arrangements, timing, and humor are tailored for the Tokyo audience, with a queue and Critter Country area unique to Disneyland in Japan.

Immersive design at every turn

From the rustic charm of the queue to the lush, storybook surroundings of Critter Country, every detail is thoughtfully crafted. Even in line, you’re enveloped in playful touches and the world of Br’er Rabbit, promising fun before you ever board your log.

How Splash Mountain came to be

History

Splash Mountain was originally conceived in the early 1980s by Disney Imagineer Tony Baxter. Stuck in traffic, he envisioned a log‑flume attraction that would breathe life into lower‑traffic areas of Disneyland, reusing characters from the soon‑to‑close America Sings show. The ride eventually opened at Disneyland in July 1989 and soon after debuted at Tokyo Disneyland on October 1, 1992—making it one of three global versions at the time, but now the only one still operating after the U.S. versions were re‑themed and retired.

Story

The ride’s narrative is woven from the animated segments of Disney’s controversial 1946 film Song of the South. It follows Br’er Rabbit as he embarks on a quest for a “Laughing Place,” encountering trickery from Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear along the way. Notably, the Tokyo version mirrors the Orlando layout in reverse, with its scene order reimagined and slightly different theming. The story culminates with Br’er Rabbit tricking Fox into throwing him into the briar patch, which is represented by the ride’s dramatic final 16‑meter plunge.

Visitor tips

  • Wear quick-drying clothes: You’re unlikely to get soaked, but a light mist is common, especially in front-row seats. Avoid heavy fabrics or bring a small towel just in case.
  • Secure your belongings: Store loose items in zippered bags or waterproof pouches. There are no lockers at the ride itself, and bags may get splashed.
  • Sit in the middle for a balanced experience: Front-row riders may catch more spray, while middle seats offer a more comfortable balance of views and dryness.
  • Don’t skip the queue details: The waiting area is beautifully themed with rustic Critter Country charm. Look out for wood carvings, lanterns, and storybook touches that set the mood before your journey.
  • Capture the drop photo: The ride photo is taken during the big final drop, so strike a pose or brace for the splash! Photos can be viewed and purchased after the ride.
