Brief history of Tokyo Skytree
2008: Construction of Tokyo Skytree began with a groundbreaking ceremony.
2009: The tower’s height was increased from 610 meters to 634 meters to make it the tallest self-supporting steel tower, with "634" (Mu-sa-shi) referencing a historic name for the Tokyo region.
2010: Tokyo Skytree became the tallest structure in Japan at 338 meters
2011: It surpassed the Canton Tower to become the world’s tallest tower at 602 meters.
2011: The tower reached its final height of 634 meters.
2011: Guinness World Records certified it as the tallest free-standing tower in the world.
2012: Construction was completed after delays caused by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. Tokyo Skytree officially opened to the public. Tickets were fully booked for two months, with 1.6 million visitors in the first week.
2022: Tokyo Skytree celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special Kabuki performance by Ichikawa Ebizo XI on a stage atop the tower.
